Historical buildings in Malacca

Malacca is rich in history and the main attraction in the state is its heritage buildings. There are many historical buildings in Malacca waiting for your visit. Jom!

1. Baba and Nyonya Peranakan Museum

Step back in time with a visit to this museum which is an actual Peranakan heritage town house and is a great example of Peranakan culture. The Baba & Nyonya House Museum was the family home to the Chan family since 1861.

Location: No. 48 & 50 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Malacca Town

2. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

The oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia. The temple site was founded since the era of Dutch Malacca by the Chinese Kapitan in 1645.

Location: 25, Jalan Tokong, Kampung Dua

3. Christ Church

This church was built between 1741 and 1753. It replaced a Portuguese church, which was shattered. Bricks were shipped from Zeeland in the Netherlands. On the floor of the church you will find Dutch tombstones. It is the oldest protestant church in Malaysia. On the altar you will see sacramental silverware, still bearing the Dutch coat of arms.

4. A’Famosa

You will find this remains of the old Portuguese fort A Famosa on Jalan Kota, around St Paul’s Hill. What you can see nowadays is a mostly Dutch reconstruction, bearing the VOC coat of arms.

5. The Stadthuys

The Stadhuys is known for its red exterior and nearby red clocktower. It was built by the Dutch in 1650 as the office of the Dutch Governor and Deputy Governor. The Stadthuys is a fine example of Dutch architecture of that period. It is believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East.

6. Kampung Hulu Mosque

The mosque, built in 1728 during the Dutch Occupancy, is the oldest mosque in the country. Its unique architectural style is a unique blend of Sumatran, Hindu and Western architecture.

All of the building’s original wooden structures except the four main pillars and the roof structure were replaced with concrete. Within the mosque compound, you can find the grave of Sayyid Abdullah Al-Haddad, a famous religious teacher, whom many regarded as a “Wali” (Saint).
